Home-Based Business

Reliance on Computer

Many home-based business are computer-centric.  "Home-based" simply means that you work from home, whatever your type of business.  Bookkeepers, tax preparers, eBay sellers, telephone representatives of all types (reservationists, sales and technical support, answering services, etc.), are all examples of home-based businesses that rely on computers.

None of the examples above, and indeed, most home-based businesses, could function without a working computer and internet connection.

Reliance on Internet

You absolutely require internet service to do your job.  And depending on your particular business, losing your internet connection for even a short time may mean losing money!

Many people have suffered through hours, or however rarely even days, of not having an internet connection.  Imagine that outage while you are trying to earn a living.

PBCIT can recommend redundant internet connection technology so that if one connection fails another can take it's place.  For example, you can have both AT&T and Comcast providing your internet connection.  Using the appropriate (and inexpensive) networking gear, your computer (local network) can toggle between these two providers depending on availability.

If you have a good relationship with your next-door neighbor and are on different internet providers then you might even be able to backup each other without the additional cost of subscribing to two providers in your own home.
